The Problem

Story viewers were not participating in feedback systems, creating a lonely environment for Story Producers, particularly those who didn't receive active replies or reactions.

The Solution

Designed Story Likes: a single-tap, persistent feedback mechanism that lowered the barrier for viewers to express care and gave producers a meaningful signal of engagement.

Target Outcome

Increase the rate at which Story viewers send feedback to producers, reducing the asymmetry between content creation and engagement.

Problem Space

Stories on Instagram had a fundamental engagement asymmetry: Story Producers put effort into creating content, but Story Viewers only had limited, high-friction ways to respond. Research showed that 60% of users dropped off between opening the reaction tray and actually sending a message. This friction meant that many Story Producers, particularly those without large followings, received zero feedback, making the experience feel one-sided and discouraging continued production.

Solution

Story Likes introduced a single-tap heart interaction, always persistent on the Stories viewer, that let anyone send feedback instantly without opening a message thread. The design was grounded in four principles: it would be additive to existing feedback (not a replacement), prioritize speed and access over customization, be easy enough to build a habit around, and require no expectation for the producer to respond.

Research & Rationale

Research surfaced a key insight: Likes are an established single-tap interaction throughout Instagram (Feed, Reels), making them consistent with existing mental models. Qualitative research confirmed that Story Likes could shift interaction social norms by helping users show they care in a way that feels faster, easier, and less stressful than messaging, particularly for casual friends and acquaintances. The feature shipped on February 14, 2022 following a structured dogfooding and testing timeline.
